| Frequently Asked GYROTONIC®
Questions
How is GYROTONIC®
exercise different from Pilates or yoga?
This is
one of the most common questions we are asked. Pilates and
yoga work more two-dimensionally. While both incorporate breath,
GYROTONIC®
incorporates breath with energetic awakening. In
Pilates, you are generally working against a spring system
when working on a machine - you have to find maximum force
to extend your springs. With GYROTONIC®
exercises, you are working with a pulley and weight system
and you are supported by the weight while it is also giving
you resistance. This helps you develop fluidity, coordination
and control - not to mention elegant long muscles. The moment
you slip on the ice, your body knows instinctively how to
harness the coordination and control to recover, as well as
the strength to respond because your nervous system and your
biological system have been trained accordingly.
GYROTONIC®
exercises are never static and held in place; exercises are
performed flowing. Some would say that Vinyasa yoga is a flow
class, so how is that any different? In GYROTONIC®
work, we move in slow motion, so again, we are not holding
a pose ever. Even in a Vinyasa class you find your pose and
hold it there for a while with breath. Imagine the 1970's
TV show the 6 Million Dollar Man, or imagine you are moving
in water. GYROTONIC®
exercises move. We free up the spine, the joints, we work
fascia, muscles, reorganize bones, and regenerate the body
from the smallest place - the cellular level. It really is
beyond anything you've ever tried. There is a reason why the
Italian's refer to it as the Couture of Exercise.
