What is the difference between mat work and machine work?

The Pilates Method can be executed with or without the use of equipment. Without equipment, Pilates is done on a mat. This form of Pilates often requires great core strength and stability to be performed correctly and for the greatest benefit, but is often the first introduction many individuals have to the Pilates Method.

Pilates on equipment is versatile and accessible to all individuals. Equipment workouts have the benefit of using varied tension and resistance, depending on the abilities and needs of the client. The springs, straps and bars used in the Pilates equipment allow more targeted support and assist in the building of core strength.

At Inspiral Motion, Pilates is performed on the mat in group classes (limited to 12), whereas equipment workouts are performed either individually, in duet sessions, or in small groups (groups of 3).
