What is Pilates?

Pilates is a sophisticated method of exercising developed by Joseph Pilates in the early part of the last century. Joseph had a long, rich history of body work and physical fitness before he took his method, first called "Contrology", to New York. Joseph opened his studio in New York with his new wife, Clara, in 1919.

Joseph was far ahead of his time, helping injured people convalesce and strengthening atheletes to new levels. His method of realigning the entire body today continues to out-do many approaches by modern physical therapists.

After Joeseph died in 1967, the "Pilates Method" was carried on by several of his long-term students. These students trained people over the years and today, there are many schools of Pilates. Click here to read about Classical Pilates.
