Osteoporosis and Osteopenia are so widespread in America,
they say its an epidemic. There are many choices women must
make when diagnosed with one of these.
Why is it scary? When bones are fragile, they are susceptible
to tiny hairline fractures. These fractures can easily grow.
Small falls on tiny fractures can cause breaks that wouldn't
happen if the bones weren't already fragile.
It's important to
- prevent movements which may cause small fractures in fragile
bones
- build muscles around fragile bones
- engage in 'weight bearing' exercises
Why? Muscles that are engaged and "loaded" will
pull on the bones at the insertion and origin points. When
the muscles are "loaded" a chemical reaction occurs
within the bone which is triggered by the loaded muscle pulling
upon the bone at the insertion / origin point. This chemical
reaction is needed for new bone growth and continued bone
strength. Sometimes with Osteoporosis, this chemical reaction
stops. Small fractures begin.
With the right treatment from your doctor and with the right
exercise, you can keep yourself strong and injury free. While
working out with weights can help, doing 'weight bearing'
exercises is better, particularly with proper form. Pilates
and GYROTONIC®
exercises are a great way to build strength at a pace that
is right for you.
Come see us, we can help you build a program that is right
for you.
We are currently offering a class for women 62+ that addresses
Osteopenia and Osteoporosis.
